No doubt a large part of the struggling was due to my lack of sympathy with calculus but I also felt that the two halves of my degree were contradictory rather than complementary. It seemed to me that the basic assumptions of economics undermined the whole idea of sociology an vice versa. That early exprience gave me an itch that I have been wanting to scratch ever since. When I finally gave in thr urgen to scrath I wrote this book. It explains to me, and hopefully to you, exactly why I found the basic assumptions of my joint honours disciplines so inimical, but it does several other things as well. 4a1.
