His father, Bahau-'d-Din, was a man of much learning, but gave offence to the reigning king by an attack on that monarch's innovations. Another account disputes this in the place of jealousy on the part of the king. Whatever the cause, however, Bahau-'d-Din left Balkh, together with his family, and settled at Nishapur. It was here that the celebrated Sufi Faridu-d Din 'Attar, presented young Jalalu'd-Din Rumi with his Asrarnama, and informed his father that the child would some day become famous throughout the world.
