Abstrak | Studying contemporary social life by comparing experiences within or across nations blinds us to many of the ways the actually works. And the social scientists, from a variety of disciplines, who do study dynamics that cross borders tend to see themselves as part of different conversations. They look at transnational corporations, religions, the art world, or social movements in isolation and therefore fail to notice the many forms and patterns these domains have in common. But it turns out that transnational economic life displays many similarities with its transnational social, political, and religious counterparts. This reader lays out the theoretical, methodological, and philosophical parameters of this new field, Transnational Studies, and highlights much of the scholarship that constitutes its intellectual foundations. |
