Abstrak | As this peperback edition goes to print the European Union celebrates the 50TH anniversary of the treaty of Rome. The celebration is modest, however, because the Union clearly suffers from a kind of mid-life crisis. The Treaty of Rome talked about an "ever closer Union" and it also stipulated that "any European state" may applyto become tits member. Fifty years later we still do not know what the phrase "ever closer Union" means and which states are sufficiently "European" to become EU members. The Union is going throught an agonizing political debate about its future destination. |
