The more fundamental idea underlying this strategic of the characteristic America understending of the relationship between war and politics. By extension, the continuities and discontinuities between the 'old' and 'new' American ways of war can only be properly understood if the new style of war is also placed in the broader context of its relationship to political utility. The most enduring theme associated with the older notion that there exised a distinctively American approach to war was its alleged rejection of the conception of war as apolitical instrument.
