Abstrak | I feel a little sheepish admitting being excited by a book for which "the relevant historical background is the tradition of Anglo-American descriptive and subject cataloging during the last century and a half." It has often been argued that those building digital libraries should take advantage of the experience of the traditional library community in organizing information. But finding ways to convey that experience has proved difficult. Elaine Svenonius intended that This book reach across disciplinary boundaries and inform the broader practice of information organization. To judge by my reaction to the book and the reactions of others she know, she has succeeded. Her analysis resonates with the experiences of those who have been faced with reconciling intellectual and descriptive metadata from different sources, developing guidelines for description in digital libraries, or trying to build systems that do a better job of supporting the information-seeking tasks of users. |
