| Abstrak | This book examines and compares two elections in Indonesia-the last New Order election in May 1997 under the authoritarian government, and the first free election in tho post-Soeharto era in June 1999-making an importantcontribution to our understanding of the demise of the NewOrder, and the directions being taken by the new regime. By exploring a mix of local, cultural, national and politicalperspectives on these elections, the contributors highlight how intense political rivalries on a local level in the 1997elections were surprisingly similar to the elections under the reform-minded goverment in 1999. |
