Abstrak | This book examines the relationship between state, society and democracy in India over the last decade. It does so by exploring the recent careers of three goals, welfare, secularism and development, each illuminated through a detailed case study. The theme of welfare is explored through a study of hunger in Kalahandi district of Orissa; the question of secularism is discussed through the issues raised by the passage of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986; while challenges to conventional developmental strategy are examined by focusing on the Narmada valley projects. In each case, the central concern is that of democracy and citizenship. This well-written and carefully argued book bridges the gap between political theory and empirical political analysis. It will be useful to post-graduate researchers in politics and to the ordinary reader interested in debates that confront contemporary India. |
