Subjek Legislation --United States.
Abstrak A manual offering information on the most important laws and treaties approved by Congress in more than 200 years since the first session in 1789. Each Congress is covered in a separate chapter introduced by a historical essay setting the actions of the legislators in the context of their times. This reference surveys the early Continental Congress and the 107 Congresses from 1774 through 2003. The author has perused thousands of laws and treaties that were enacted and selected about 1,181 that have had significant influence on the U.S. A preface and introduction discuss the legislative process and describe how legislation evolves. Assisting users is a 22-page "Finders Guide" in which the laws and treaties are arranged under 41 subject headings. The text is arranged chronologically by congress. Headings provide the dates of each congress and session and identify the president in office at the time. This is followed by a one- to two-and-a-half page description of the historical background of legislation in each congress, and an annotated list of major acts. Each annotation tells the purpose of the act and the date passed, and provides a citation to a copy of the full text. Following the main text, an extensive "Sources for Further Study" is arranged by approximately 74 subject headings. Rounding out the volume is a 34-page index in which entries in boldface type refer to major acts in the text. This well-organized volume will allow users to quickly find a description of important legislation and determine where they can locate the full text. It will also allow researchers to determine what legislation was produced during various congresses and administrations. Users can also easily see how legislative subjects have evolved over several generations. This will be a useful source for academic and public libraries.
