Abstrak This book examines the background of the Arab political tradition to highlight a number of aspects that explain the appeal and the tenacity of the dynastic approach to political succession. The first of these aspects, tribal and family loyaltics and attitudes, is central to issue and derives from the tribal past. Loyalty to the family and tribe permeates Arab societies and has considerable implications for thebroad sweep of Arab politics. Despite suggestions from some observers that urbanization and the power of the modern state have destroyed the traditional tribal way of life, the persistence of the attitudes associated with tribal and especially family loyatitics is a key to understanding the way in which Arab governments and populations behave.
