Distinguished experts make a fresh contribution to the scholarly debate on Northern Ireland in this book, which offers a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary overview of the subject. The remote and proximate causes of the Irish conflict are analyzed, and recent developments within the two states on the island are discussed from political, social, and cultural perspectives. The role of the Roman Catholic Church at the time of the foundation of the state of Northern Ireland is discussed, as well as the Protestant churches in the context of the rise of the ecumenical movement. Particular attention is paid to the development in Northern Ireland after 1969. The framework for peace established by the 1985 Anglo-Irish Agreement is explored by one of its architects, Garret FitzGerald, the former Irish prime minister, and other contributors discuss the impact of the agreement on the triangular among Dublin, Belfast, and London. The volume concludes with an evaluation of Northern Ireland in the context of the European Community. The contributors do not propound any instant or easy solutions; rather, the essays provide a context in which the problem may be better understood by the international scholarly community and by the interested general reader.
