It extends theories of industry-based global competition (Porter, Doz, Prahalad, Bartlett and Ghoshal) and explores the interactions between structural forces at the industry level and competitive actions at the firm level. The use of in-dept qualitative data-interviews with executives in charge of the international strategy in 122 firms from 10 centuries-gives it a unique style and procedures an integrative framework to handle the complexities of international business: the dynamics of segmentation, regional competitive territories, tensions between integration and differentiation, and strategic variations. In this dialogue between practitioners and group of researchers, business students will find both theoretical insights and practical menthods, and scholars will find a case of organic theory built upon contextual practical knowledge.
