Hopes of a bipolar defence industry, in which businesses within the European Union provide a significant challenge to those of the United States in the global market place, appear remote. There are strong indications that the wide trans Atlantic gap will remain in the coming years as US defence spending will continue to significantly outpace that of the EU.
