The second edition of the book has been substantially revised. The chapter on Israel has been restructured to include a discussion of both Israeli and Palestinian politics, and a much-needed chapter on Turkey has been added. The Iraqi chapter has been largely rewritten and remains a work in progress. Few regions of the world approach the Middle east for the richness of its past, the turmoil of its present, or the uncertainty of its future.
