The United States high incarceration rate has cause lawmakers, advocates, and legal professionals to rethink punishment policies as well as develop new policies on prisoner education and rehabilitation. Further, as many of the entires detail, prison has become a big business in the United States, spawning not just private prison companies, but a multitude of small businesses that service penal facilities, including those in maintenance, laundry, food, and clothing. In some communities, prison provide one of the only sources of employment. Issues of race, gender, and class are fully integrated throughout in order to demonstrate the complexity of the implementation and intended results of incarceration. The encyclopedia also contains biographies and articles describing important legal statutes, as well as detailed and authoritative descriptions of the major prisons in the United States. Comparative data and example are employed to analyze the American system within an international context. The encyclopedia has an appendix containing a comprehensive listing of every federal prison in the United States, complete with facility details and service information. There are also a number of sidebars and illustrations, including graphs, diagrams, and photographs. In the sidebars, a number of current prisoners share their firsthand accounts of life behind bars.	13
