Catatan
Indeks : Indeks ; In this strikingly and original work, Harold Bloom extends his investigation of the religious imagination begun with his national bestseller The Book of J to produce a briliant new examination of America's national soul. The American Religion seeks to answer the question "What do American really believe?" Harold Bloom finds that although America considers itself a cristian nation, in fact, American civilization has spawnedits own pecu liar theology, a spirituality that bloom classifies as a form of Gnosticism. In this book, he examines the manifestationof this native religiojn among adherents of the five major made-in-America faiths--Pentecostalists, Mormons, Adventists, Christian Scientists, and Jehovah's Witnesses--as well asthe beliefs of Southern Baptists and African-American. In the process, Mr. Bloom creates a provocative and controversial study of the innermost meanings of religion over two centuries of America culture.
