At the end of our strife ridden century, people everywhere are concerned about how well civilization's most cherished standards are being passed along to the younger generation. The "values" and "character" of the young are explored daily in the populer press and politicians' speeches. Sooner or later, widespread public concern usually translates into scholarly scrutiny. The problem of young people's morality has become a galvanizing research topic throughout the social and life sciences and the humanities. Sociologists, biologists, anthropologists, historians, literary critics, economists, and cognitive scientists have joined developmental psychologists and philosophers in studying how young people learn to distinguish right from wrong and, most importantly, how we can induce them to prefer the former over the latter.
