520 _ _ $a This book is essential reading for those concerned with judges and judiciaries. It is an ellectic compilation of views from across the common law world. The issues are discussed from the prespective of the challenges encountered by the justice system in developed societies and developing countries. Among the issues are considered are matters relating to judicial decision-making in plural societies, conflicts of interest among judges, questions of judicial corruption and types of accountability mechanisms for judges. An important contribution is the discussion on the Latimer House Guidelines on Parliamentary Supremacy and Judicial Independence which is today gaining wider recognition from the Commenwealth judiciaries. If there is an aim and a goal to the processes of judicial accountability it is encapsulated in the memorable words of Justice Michael Kirby of Australia who observes: ?judges are the essential equalisers; they serve no majority nor any minority either. Their duty is to the law and to justice. They do not bend the knee to governments, to particular religions, to the military, to money, to tabloid media or the screaming mob?. They are words that should fasten on to the hearts and minds of all judges and lawyers and all those concerned with the administration of justice. 14
