<subfield code="a">Peter Laslett edition of Locke's Two Treatises of Government is widely recognised as one of the classic pieces of recent seholarship in the history of ideas, and has been read and used by students of political theory throughout the world. Dr Laslett demonstrated that the version usual1y cited was in no way representation of that 'text for posterity' Locke left behind, and exhaustive analysis of Locke's private papers and personal librarv caused Dr Laslett radically to alter the received notion that the Two Treatises were in any sense rationalisation of the events of 1688: Locke's texts were rather a call for a revolution yet to come. For publication in Cambridge Texts in tbe History of Political Thought Peter Laslett has revised his own amended second edition (1970) of the Two Treaties, updating the bibliography and engaging with many of the refinements generated by recent advances in Locke scholarship. A guide to further reading and a ful1y reset and reworked introduction should enable further generations of students to come to an improved understanding of two of the central texts in western political thought.</subfield>
