Our hope is that students will take away a basic knowledge of and appreciation for communication theory from reading our text. Over the course of more than forty combined years of teching communication theory, we have learned that students materail best when it is explained in a simple, direct way through a number of realistic and applicable examples, and applies all that we as teachers have learned from our students. We continue to be indebted to both students and colleagues whose suggestions and comments have greatly in fluenced this third edition. The theories in communication studies have roots in both communication and in other fields of study. This exciting interdisciplinary orientation is reflected in the selection of the various theories presented in the text.
