It was large class--fifty or sixty students, as I recall. Given the tenor of the national mood, I didn't feel there was any way I could simply teach these students to speak persuasively. Instead, I decided to teach the course from the perspective of the receiver, the consumer of persuasion who was faced with thousands of persuasive appeals every day--some of which seemed benign, others malignant. The goal of the tenth edition remains the same as in the previous editions: to help train you to be a critical, questioning, and somewhat suspicious consumer and receiver of persuasive messages.
